To assist the Risk Management and Environmental Departments, we hired Franco Oboni and his team in 1999. They came highly recommended, not only from our mining colleagues and competitors, but also from a wide source of industrial firms and international companies. The project required that the Oboni team quickly learn and understand the corporate history, overview of past events, global corporate culture and issues of concern. The major request we made of the team was the development of a tool that could be utilized to complement and constructively assess past and future risk assessments. For newer operations this tool was to be comprehensive enough to actually use from the ground up. It was also designed to be a "live" tool, detailed enough, but user friendly so that interaction with all levels of employees was achieved. Through brainstorming and interactive sessions with the project committee, senior management, and operations personnel from around the world, the team was instrumental in helping us achieve a very aggressive goal. They assisted us in moving many steps towards our mutually agreed to targets. This project has proved educational and inspirational from both a risk management and assessment perspective. The Oboni team has demonstrated that reviews and processes of this nature are fundamental to safe and strategic business practices that have a positive impact on the company’s profitability.

Oboni conducted Quantitative Risk Assessments at six of our Canadian minesites. The assessments were comprehensive and greatly assisted us in identifying the highest risk failure modes for our tailings impoundments and appropriate risk management plans. Several innovative approaches to risk assessment were applied, dramatically improving resolving power and ultimate value.
