Table of Contents:

NB: the Table of Contents has been condensed for the web site to generally display sections down to the second level for each one of the four parts of the book. Generally speaking, Part I and III contain conceptual developments, whereas Parts II and IV contain concrete examples drawn from day to day practice.

PART I HAZARDS, CRISES, ASSESSMENTS AND TOLERABILITY

Develops general concepts and defines a step by step approach to risk assessments. Reviews the risk management practices of various industries such as Railroads, Mining, Oil and Gas, Roads as well as other networks and communities after retracing the history of the discipline from it first steps in the 40s and pioneering examples in the nuclear practice.

Introduces a systematic model for crises analysis, then discusses a number of examples such as: The US$4 Billion Apple’s Email (2007), The Los Frailes Tailings Dam Failure (1998-2006), The SARS Outbreak (2003), The Ashland Oil Tank Explosion (1998), Shell Oil Crisis, Nigeria (1995-1996), Canadian Forestry Crisis (1993-1994), Mitsubishi FUSO Wheel Scandal (1993-2004), Bridgestone Firestone and the Ford Explorer (1990-2001).

PART II EXAMPLES OF RISK ASSESSMENT AND THEIR USE

Urban Development, Humanitarian Projects, Mining, Regional/Provincial Development Plans, Counter-Terrorism.

PART III RISK AND DECISION MAKING

Can we define overspending on a large scale mitigative project? Strategic vs. tactical decision making. Can we define a financial fiasco probability? Is a project doomed from inception? Why? Will an operation be able to ensure proper closure? How do risks (upside and downside) affect a project? How will an income variation affect this project if it happens at different points in time during the life of a project? If something nasty happens at a later date will my project be able to tolerate it better than if it happens tomorrow? Is that always the case ?

PART IV EXAMPLES OF CRBDM USE

A few examples where CRBDM has been applied: raising a whole factory to escape flooding, installing an aerial tramway to transport industrial residues (rather than trucking) and actually converting the operation into an ancillary energy production business, covering a railroad with a shed rather then performing other maintenance work…
